3 Uber-Easy Ways to Detox (starving not required)

The last couple times that I attempted to do a cleanse it completely backfired.  I gained weight, I felt cranky and frustrated, and found every opportunity to break the rules because, eff it, I hate rules.  Don’t tell me what to do, cleeeanse!

All I wanted that effervescent lightness and elation that is commonly associated cleanses (that I had experienced in the past), but instead I was all cranky pants, all the time.

I’ve been really interested in little things I can do to detox that don’t involve a grand gesture (i.e. ajuice cleanse) and I’ve started doing a couple things that I’d lurve to share.

 

#1: Oil Pulling

I found out about it from the Two Peas in a Pod girls, Kate and Jess.  Because of their uber bubbly attitudes and blindingly white teeth I had to try this ancient detox method.   After a few weeks, I must say, I too, am now obsessed with this part of my mourning routine.   Most people start their day by turning on the TV or checking their phones and getting smacked in the face with a harsh reality.  But I’ve turned this into a calming morning practice where I just chill, swish and read for a good 20 minutes before jumping into my cray-cray day.

#2 Epsom Salt Baths

Like a hug from your mom or when it’s all of a sudden 75 and sunny… epsom Salt Baths just make everything in life better.   Baths, in general, are the best, but add some epsom salts and it becomes and it simultaneously becomes a detoxifying experience too.  Some of the countless health benefits of soaking with Epsom Salts include:

  • relaxing the nervous system
  • curing skin problems
  • soothing back pain and aching limbs
  • easing muscle strain
  • healing cuts
  • treating cold and congestion
  • drawing toxins from the body

So, if you find yourself feeling achey, stressed, sick, stuck or otherwise?  Just soak it out, dude.

 

#3: Detox Tea

This is my jammmmm, you guys.  While I’m swishing my oil in the morning, I’m simultaneously brewing some sensational tea that’s going to let my daily detox mojo flow.  This recipe is based on one that I found in an incredible Ayurvedic cookbook called Eat, Taste, Heal.  If you’re not familiar, Ayurveda is a traditional Indian medical practice based on the idea that there are 3 main body types or “Doshas”.  The practice is all about staying in balance with the food and lifestyle.  This tea is particularly beneficial to people with a Kapha dosha.

Detox Tea Recipe

Servings: 1 (it’s a lot of tea, but you can sip on this sucker all morning)
Time: 10 minutes
What you need: a medium pot, a fine mesh strainer, and a heat safe bowl, pot or large glass

  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 10 basil leaves
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 inch ginger, sliced into thin coins
  • 1/2 a lemon, juiced
  • 4 cups cold, filtered water

Directions

Bring 4 cups of filtered water up to a boil with the cinnamon, basil, cumin and ginger.  Allow it to boil for 5 minutes.

Remove the pot from heat, add the lemon juice and allow the tea to steep for 3-5 minutes.

Strain the tea through a fine mesh sieve into another container.

Sip on the warm tea all day.
