5 Simple Things You Can Do For The Enviroment

On March 10, 2014

There’s a lot of noise out there around how was can save the environment and even though I’m one of the people up there on a soap box spewing info, I also feel really overwhelmed and intimidated a lot of the time.

There’s a lot of talk about all the things we’re doing wrong and all the ways we’re poisoning ourselves so I wanted to come up with a short list of simple things we can all do to help the environment.

Of course things like recycle, walk or ride a bike instead of driving, and turning off the lights when you leave a room are standard so I didn’t feel the need to reiterate those.

1. Reusuable bags.  I always keep one or two in my purse so I can forego the plastic when I make a pitstop at a shop.  I love envirosax because they have  great designs, are often on sale, and they last forever.

2. Cut down on product packaging.  I know the bulk aisle can seem weird and intimidating but it’s the best place to save money and cut down on unnecessary packaging.  We create a lot of paper and plastic waste by buying packaged products at the grocery store so when there’s an option to get something in the bulk aisle, I always bite.

3. Compost your waste. Every farmer’s market has a place that you can bring your compost.  Your garbage is food for the soil.  Keep that nutrient circle tight by composting the plant matter you don’t consume including cooking scraps and anything that went womp-womp (sad trombone) before you could eat it.

4. No silverware when getting takeout.  When you’re getting take out or delivery make a point of saying that you do not need utensils.  How often to napkins, forks and straws go directly into the garbage can?  It takes 30 seconds and it can make a big difference.

5. Use rags instead of paper towels.  Why kill a tree because you spilled some milk?  Cut up old towels and t-shirts and use rags instead of papertowels.  In one year you’ll not only save a lot of trees, but also a lot of money.

If you’re doing these things already.  HIGH FIVE.  If you’re looking for a way to “do your part” start with one of these and go from there.

What are some other ways that you do your part help the environment?
